How to prepare for NEET 2018 – What previous toppers say?

1. Make a smart NEET 2018 study timetable

If you ever ask a topper what is that one vital element required to clear NEET 2018, a prime NEET preparation tip that they will immediately suggest is for you chalk out a smart and systematic study timetable.

According to Deric Joseph who secured All India Rank (AIR) 6 in NEET, AIR 16 in AIIMS MBBS and AIR 17 in JIPMER MBBS in 2017, having a smart study plan is a must to focus one’s NEET preparations. He says, “If one wants to crack NEET, there is no other alternative but hard work. Fix a timetable and study accordingly with a systematic approach.”

In order to emerge with flying colours in NEET 2018, students must know the when what and how to study. For that, students need to maintain a comprehensive NEET study timetable and abide by it religiously as a core part of their NEET 2018 preparation.

A smart NEET 2018 study plan will require you to:

  • List down all the topics you need to cover and allot a time cap and schedule to each. This will become your basic timetable on how to prepare NEET 2018.

  • While solving NEET mock tests, note down all the doubts that you come across.

  • Approach your coaching teachers or mentors as regularly as you can to get your doubts cleared.

  • Note down the important formulas and points on a separate sheet while studying.

2. Use previous years’ question papers, sample papers, mock tests and question banks

Every previous NEET topper suggests that one of the key NEET 2018 preparation tips is to solve myriad mock tests before appearing for the exam. As shared by Dhirtiman Chatterjee who secured AIR 8 in NEET 2016, “Sincere efforts and continuous practice were the key efforts behind my victory. I used to solve as many mock/practice tests as possible.”

So simply put, solve as many mock tests and previous years’ NEET papers as you can. Attempt full-length mock tests of NEET 2018 irrespective of your level of NEET 2018 preparation. Do not wait until the last minute to complete the syllabus before proceeding to solve the NEET 2018 mock tests and previous year papers. Solving mock tests consistently through your preparations will help you develop a proper time-management strategy, evaluate your NEET preparation levels and familiarize yourself with the NEET 2018 exam pattern.

Besides full-length mocks, take help of sample papers and question banks. After studying every chapter, practice solving chapter-specific questions from the question banks. Practising MCQ type questions from the NEET sample papers which are based on the NEET 2018 paper pattern will help one enhance their understanding of all the chapters.

3. Revision is a must

I just followed what I was taught in my coaching institute and did lots of revision. I made sure I would revise at home whatever I was taught in the class,” says Archit Gupta, who achieved the rare distinction of securing AIR 2 in both NEET and AIIMS in 2017.

As suggested by Archit, revision is of utmost importance in one’s NEET 2018 preparations. It is especially pertinent in the preparation of Biology. Revise on a regular basis, especially the subjects you are weak in. Studying the subjects merely once isn’t enough as constant revision will be the key to success in NEET 2018.

4. Keep yourself calm through stress-relieving activities

In order to get rid of stress, I regularly played various sports including Cricket, Football, Table Tennis and Badminton. I also used to spend time with my friends whenever I needed to relax,” says NEET 2017 AIR 7, Harsh Agarwal.

It is but natural for aspirants to start panicking with only a few months remaining for the exam. However, anxiety can severely undermine all the confidence you may have built in your preparation phase. Studying for 9 to 10 hrs is an important preparation tip for NEET, but it is equally important to keep yourself relaxed and rejuvenated. Find out what you enjoy doing as a hobby or whatever helps you destress, and indulge in the same from time to time over the course of your NEET preparations.

5. Engage in quality study

An important NEET 2018 preparation tip is to choose quality over quantity every time. There is no point in studying for 12 hours if you have only been able to maintain full concentration for 8 hours in that.

Conceptual clarity is very important when preparing for MCQ based questions as they demand the application of concepts over rote learning and preparing for the same comprehensively requires full focus. Allocate your time properly and in a balanced manner to each subject of NEET 2018 ie. Physics, Chemistry and Biology in such a manner that the quality of your studying is not affected. Focus on making your strong areas stronger, while slowly improving in your weaker areas as well.
According to Deric, “Basically the strategy was to focus on all subjects and clear the concepts. Since 50 percent weightage is given on Biology, I focussed more on this subject. After that, I moved towards Physics. Since Chemistry is my favourite subject, I did not need to put much efforts behind it but I studied it thoroughly.”
