Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) will be starting a new branch of the medical college in Karaikal, Puducherry. According to an official notification, the new branch will have an initial strength of 50 candidates for the MBBS programme; seats for which are already on offer from the 2016-17 academic year. The medical college is expected to raise the students' strength to 100 in future batches. According to JIPMER officials, the new campus will temporarily operate from the Rangasamy Arts College till the completion of the academic campus in Karaikal.
Earlier, in a press conference held on 17 February 2016, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy had said that the UT government had earmarked 80 acres of land for the Karaikal branch and the project outlay for the same was being worked out.
The new campus will operate under the banner of JIPMER and it will provide all the healthcare services and facilities similar to the current Puducherry campus.
According to experts, an additional number of government medical seats is not only good news for students who wish to pursue MBBS programmes from premiere medical colleges of India but also people who are looking for quality healthcare.
With the launch of the new branch JIPMER would, at least, add 50 more seats to its current intake of 150 making a total of 200 MBBS seats. However, whether the admission process for the new seats will be initiated from this year or not will be validated only on release of the JIPMER MBBS 2016 academic brochure.
JIPMER MBBS 2016 is a national level entrance schedule to be conducted in computer based mode on June 5, 2016 at designated centres across India. The exam is expected to be taken by around 1.5 lakh candidates with a dream to pursue MBBS from one of the most premium medical institutions in India.
