Antibodies
Antibodies are glycoproteins formed in response to antigenic stimulation and counteract with antigens with great specificity.
The antibodies are found in the serum fraction of the blood and are also known as immunoglobulins (Ig).
Each antibody molecule has four peptide chains, two small called light chains and two longer called heavy chains.
Hence, an antibody is represented as H2L2.
Each light-chain contains a single variable-domain and a single constant-domain.
Each heavy-chain contains a singly variable-domain and three, sometimes, four constant-domains.
Variable (V) regions of both the chains lie opposite to each other at the top of the two arms of the antibody molecule and represent the site where the antigen-antibody-binding takes place.
According to their physicochemical properties, the immunoglobulins are subdivided into five different classes, namely, IgG, IgA, IgM, IgD, and IgE.
