    Human Brain: Location and Coverings

    • The brain is located in the cranial cavity (cranium) of the skull.
    • It is enclosed in a bony case called cranium which protects brain against external injury.
    • The brain is surrounded by three membranes called meninges (sing-meninx).
    • Outer duramater is a tough white membrane present below the cranium, closely adhering to the cranium.
    • Middle arachnoid layer has a network of fibres.
    • Inner piamater is a thin, transparent, and vascular membrane close to the surface of the brain and spinal cord.
    • The space between duramater and arachnoid is the subdural space.
    • The space between the arachnoid and piamater is known as subarachnoid space.
    • These spaces surrounding the brain as well as the cavities within the brain are filled with a fluid
    • Subarachnoid space is filled with fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
    • The cerebrospinal fluid is also present within the spinal cord.
    • Functions of CSF are :
    1. Mechanical cushion to brain
    2. Source of nutrition to brain
    3. Excretion of metabolic waste products
    4. Intra-cerebral transport medium
    5. Control of chemical environment
    6. Auto-regulation of intracranial pressure

    • The brain structure is composed of three main parts: the forebrain, midbrain and hindbrain, each with multiple parts.
