Basidiomycetes (Club fungi)
  • Basidiomycetes grow on moist soil, logs, trunks of trees or as parasites.
  • Mycelium is septate and branched. Both the monokaryotic and dikaryotic mycelia are seen. Dikaryotic mycelium show dolipore septum and clamp connections.
  • Asexual reproduction is absent in basidiomycetes.
  • Sexual organs are absent in basidiomycetes. 
  • Sexual reproduction is by somatogamy between cells of monokaryotic mycelium of opposite strains. It results in the formation of dikaryotic mycelium which gives rise to basidium.
  • In the basidium karyogamy takes place. The diploid nucleus undergoes meiosis and later basidiospores are formed exogenously on the basidium.
  • The fruiting body of basidiomycetes is called basidiocarp.
  • Basidiomycetes include mushrooms, toadstools, bracket fungi and puffballs. Eg. Agaricus, Ustilago, Puccinia.
  • Ustilago tritici causes loose smut of wheat and U. maydis causes smut of corn.
  • Puccinia graminis causes black rust of wheat and Puccinia glumarum causes yellow rust of wheat.
  • Agaricus is edible while Amanita is poisonous.
