Concepts Covered - 1

Cyanobacteria
  • Cyanobacteria are also known as blue-green algae are photosynthetic prokaryotes.
  • They are considered to be the most ancient forms of algae.
  • Cyanobacteria are found in all kinds of environments.
  • They possess photosynthetic pigments like chlorophyll a, phycocyanin and carotenoids.
  • Their reserve food material is cyanophycean starch.
  • They are unicellular, colonial or filamentous organisms.
  • Each filament remains covered in a mucilage covering.
  • Flagella are absent in cyanobacteria.
  • Cyanobacteria do not have chloroplasts. Photosynthesis takes place in membranous stacks called chromatophores.
  • Cyanobacteria possess heterocysts which are thick-walled cells that are found in terminal, intercalary or lateral position. It is involved in the nitrogen fixation.
  • Examples: Spirulina ( highly proteinaceous superfood ), Nostoc, Oscillatoria, Anabaena and Rivularia etc.
