  • Inflammation: The inflammation of the intestinal tract is the most common ailment due to bacterial or viral infections. The infections are also caused by the parasites of the intestine like tapeworm, roundworm, threadworm, hookworm, pinworm, etc.
  • Viral gastroenteritis is an intestinal infection marked by watery diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting. It is also called stomach flu.
  • Jaundice:  The liver is affected, skin and eyes turn yellow due to the deposit of bile pigments. It is caused due to inflammation of the liver, inflammation of the bile duct, and hemolytic anaemia.
  • Vomiting: It is the ejection of stomach contents through the mouth. This reflex action is controlled by the vomiting centre in the medulla. A feeling of nausea precedes vomiting.
  • Constipation: In constipation, the faeces are retained within the colon as the bowel movements occur irregularly.
  • Indigestion: In this condition, the food is not properly digested leading to a feeling of fullness. The causes of indigestion are inadequate enzyme secretion, anxiety, food poisoning, overeating, and spicy food.
  • Pancreatitis is a disease in which the pancreas becomes inflamed. Pancreatic damage occurs when the digestive enzymes are activated before they are released into the small intestine. 
  • Hepatitis refers to an inflammatory condition of the liver. It is commonly caused by a viral infection. It can also be caused due to an autoimmune condition or medications, drugs, alcohol, etc.
  • Gall stone is the formation of stones within the gallbladder. 
  • Ulcerative colitis is a chronic or long-lasting disease that causes inflammation, irritation and sores called ulcers on the inner lining of the large intestine.
  • Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes allergy to gluten.
  • PEM (Protein-energy malnutrition): Dietary deficiencies of proteins and total food calories are widespread in many underdeveloped countries.
