The pancreas is a soft, oblong, glandular structure that lies transversely in the retroperitoneum behind the stomach.
Its head is present in the C-shaped curvature of the duodenum.
The pancreas is a heterocrine gland. It is a mix of exocrine (secreting digestive enzymes) and endocrine (releasing hormones into the blood) functions.
It is covered by the serosa or serous capsule formed by external visceral peritoneum and internal dense connective tissue.
The main pancreatic duct, called the duct of Wirsung, is formed from smaller ducts within the pancreas.
The main pancreatic duct opens into the hepatopancreatic ampulla.
The exocrine part of the pancreas is made up of rounded lobules called the acini.
These secrete alkaline pancreatic juice with pH 8.4
The pancreatic juice contains:
Sodium bicarbonate
Proenzymes: trypsinogen, chymotrypsinogen and procarboxypeptidase
