Stomach of Ruminants
  • In ruminants like cattle, sheep and deer etc. the stomach is structurally very complicated.
  • It has four specialised chambers called rumen, reticulum, omasum and the abomasum and hence the stomach is 'Compound Stomach'
  • Process of digestion is as follows :
  1. The process begins in the first two chambers (rumen and reticulum)
  2. Rumen produces cellulase enzyme that digests plant fibres
  3. The digested part is further sent to third chamber 'the omasum'
  4. In the omasum, the bacterial action takes place that results in formation of 'Cud'
  5. This cud produced is regurgitated back into the animal’s mouth where they can be chewed again. The saliva of the cow greatly aids in digesting the cud
  6. This then passes into the omasum again and then into abomasum
  7. The abomasum is regarded as 'true stomach' where final digestion takes place and the food then enters the intestine
