Medicine or MBBS is a coveted profession in India. The number of candidates appearing for NEET UG (the entrance exam for medical aspirants) increases year after year. In 2023, 20.24 lakh candidates appeared for the exam out of which 11. 8 were female candidates and 9.02 were male candidates. A look at numbers can give you an idea as to how big this field is for an Indian student and their family.
Which college you must select is stage 2 of this competition. And there is no end to discussions, research, and information gathering till the student has finally paid the fees and secured the seat at the college of their choice. Sometimes, there are midterm college switches too that happen, but that is a discussion for another day.
Let us today understand how the top medical colleges across India, where lakhs of students aspire to have ‘Dr’ as a prefix to their name fare when they are ranked by the NIRF.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranked 50 medical colleges in 2023. For this article, Careers360 has analysed top 10 medical colleges that offer the undergraduate programme. Colleges that provide only postgraduate programmes have not been considered. Thus colleges such as Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences, Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, which rank higher in the report are not included in the analysis.

Out of 176 medical colleges participating only the top 50 were included in the ranking.

As per the NIRF 2023 report, 92.56 per cent of students across the top 10 medical colleges completed their MBBS programme within the minimum stipulated time of five years Among these, only two colleges achieved a 100 per cent graduation rate.

As per the placement date of NIRF 2023, Christian Medical College and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham placed their entire batch. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi did not place a single student despite being ranked the highest among 10 colleges in the list.

MBBS as a degree itself opens gates for numerous career opportunities in the medical field. However, some graduates prefer to go for a master's to earn specialisation.
