An Interview with Asmita Bhujel, a GNM Nursing Student at EPSN, Bangalore

East Point School of Nursing (EPSN), Bengaluru was established in the year 2004. East Point College of Nursing is approved by the Indian Nursing Council (INC). EPSN Bengaluru admissions are offered based on the merit obtained in the qualifying examination. Diploma course offered by EPSN Bengaluru is General Nursing and Midwifery.

This interview with Asmita Bhujel, a GNM student at East Point School of Nursing, Bengaluru, is presented to you by Careers360. In this interview, Asmita speaks about campus life, medical facilities and hostels at EPSN Bengaluru.

Careers360: Tell us something about yourself. Where are you from? What made you pursue Nursing? What do you hope to achieve with this course?

Hello, my name is Asmita Bhujel, and I’m from West Bengal. I am currently pursuing my Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) first year at East Point School of Nursing, Bengaluru. I chose nursing because of my deep desire to serve others and make a difference in their lives. My father played a key role in inspiring me to take up nursing, and I view it not just as a career, but as a calling to care, heal, and bring hope to those in need.

Through this course, I aim to become a skilled and compassionate nurse, gaining both theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical experience. My goal is to grow personally and professionally, and eventually work in a healthcare setting where I can contribute to patient care and well-being. I also hope to pursue higher education in nursing and be a part of healthcare awareness programs, making a lasting impact in the community.

Careers360: Presently, which course are you pursuing and in which year are you? What has been your most rewarding academic experience so far?

Asmita: I am currently in my first year of the Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) program at East Point School of Nursing. Coming from an arts background, transitioning into nursing was a big shift, but the support from faculty and hands-on training helped me adapt and thrive.

The opportunity to serve and learn during health awareness programs in rural areas of Bengaluru has also been a highlight. It gave me real insight into public health challenges and helped me develop empathy and communication skills. Participating in “Samskruthi,” our national-level intercollegiate fest, was another great experience, offering a platform for creativity and bonding beyond academics.

Careers360: Tell us about the course curriculum and specialisations offered. Are the learnings more theory-based or practical-based?

Asmita: The General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course at East Point School of Nursing is a 3-year diploma program, including 2.5 years of academic study and 6 months of internship. The curriculum covers subjects like Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Nursing Foundations, Midwifery, Community Health, Paediatric Nursing, and Psychiatric Nursing.

The program ensures a balanced mix of theory and practice, but it places greater emphasis on practical exposure. Clinical training is conducted in the on-campus East Point Medical College Hospital, a multi-speciality facility that allows us to learn real-time procedures and patient care under expert supervision. The clinical postings across departments such as surgery, paediatrics, psychiatry, and maternity offer immersive learning. This hands-on approach prepares us to handle real-world healthcare challenges with confidence and competence.

Careers360: Did you face any difficulty in the initial months when you joined the institute?

Asmita: Yes, the initial months were a period of adjustment. Coming from a different state with a new environment, new subjects, and unfamiliar food and culture, I did face some challenges. However, the welcoming environment at East Point, along with supportive teachers and helpful peers, made the transition easier.

I gradually adapted to the rigorous schedule, balanced clinical duties with theory classes, and learned to manage my time effectively. The diversity on campus also helped me learn about different cultures, making the experience enriching. Over time, what started as a challenge became a journey of personal growth and learning.

Careers360: What activities are offered in the institute? Are there any clubs or societies for extracurricular activities?

Asmita: East Point School of Nursing offers a vibrant campus life beyond academics. The institute conducts annual cultural festivals like Samskruthi, where students participate in dance, music, and drama. For sports enthusiasts, the campus includes basketball, volleyball, and badminton courts, along with a gym and open playgrounds. We also engage in community outreach activities such as health awareness camps, national health programs, and inter-college competitions. Educational clubs and student committees encourage participation in seminars, workshops, group discussions, and clinical demonstrations. These initiatives have helped me build communication skills, leadership qualities, and teamwork—all of which are essential for a well-rounded nursing professional.

Careers360: Tell us about the faculty-student ratio here and the teacher-student relationship in your understanding.

Asmita: The faculty-student ratio at East Point School of Nursing is well-structured, allowing each student to receive focused attention. Teachers are experienced, knowledgeable, and approachable. They treat students with respect and genuinely care about our academic and emotional growth. Small batch sizes during clinical postings help us receive one-on-one guidance, making learning more effective.

Careers360: Does your college help you get internships? Have you undergone an internship via college? What was the experience like?

Asmita: Yes, East Point School of Nursing provides structured internship opportunities as part of the curriculum.

Careers360: How comfortable are your hostels and how about the cleanliness factor over there?

Asmita: The hostels at East Point School of Nursing are clean, secure, and comfortable. Rooms are well-ventilated and furnished with essentials like beds, study tables, and storage. Housekeeping staff maintains hygiene by cleaning rooms, washrooms, and common areas regularly. We also have laundry facilities, clean drinking water, and an uninterrupted power supply. Each hostel is monitored by wardens, ensuring discipline and safety. There is also a quiet study hall and recreation areas that provide a balanced living environment. The hostel's peaceful surroundings, combined with friendly peers, make it feel like a second home where I can focus on my studies and personal growth.

Careers360: What about the medical facilities? Can you avail requisite medical attention in case of an emergency?

Asmita: Yes, our institute is equipped with excellent medical facilities. Being situated on a multidisciplinary health sciences campus with a 1000-bed East Point Medical College Hospital, immediate medical attention is always available. In case of any emergency, students are promptly attended to by qualified medical staff. The hospital offers 24/7 casualty services, ICU care, diagnostic support, and ambulance facilities. Minor ailments are treated at the campus clinic, while serious cases are referred to the hospital just a few minutes away. This accessible and responsive system ensures that students feel secure and supported at all times.

Careers360: How do you balance your studies, projects, exams, and other activities?

Asmita: Balancing academics and extracurriculars requires proper planning and discipline. I follow a daily schedule that prioritises study hours, clinical postings, project work, and revision time. I try to break larger tasks into smaller goals and complete them step-by-step. During exam season, I dedicate more time to revision and seek help from teachers when needed. I also participate in campus activities and cultural events, which help reduce stress and refresh my mind. Group studies, peer discussions, and time management techniques have helped me stay organised. The support from faculty and friends has made it easier to handle pressure and stay focused.

Careers360: What all facilities do you have on the campus? What do you like here the most which you feel is unique and differentiating?

Asmita: Our campus provides excellent academic and personal development facilities. These include well-ventilated classrooms, advanced nursing skill labs, computer labs, a central library with thousands of books and e-journals, and a well-equipped simulation centre. Hostels are secure and comfortable, with good food, clean surroundings, and recreational spaces. The campus also includes playgrounds, a gym, a canteen, and dedicated transport services. What I like most is the lush green, peaceful environment and the supportive faculty. The integration of medical, pharmacy, and allied health sciences departments fosters interdisciplinary learning, which is unique and enriching for nursing students.

Careers360: What are the popular hangouts at the institute? What are the most visited places nearby?

Asmita: At East Point School of Nursing, the canteen and playground are popular hangout spots where students gather to relax, catch up, and recharge between classes. These spaces foster a sense of community and provide a perfect break from academic routines.
