10 Percent Law of Energy Flow
- The number of trophic levels in the grazing food chain is restricted as the transfer of energy follows 10 percent law – only 10 percent of the energy is transferred to each trophic level from the lower trophic level.
- In nature, it is possible to have so many levels – producer, herbivore, primary carnivore, secondary carnivore in the grazing food chain.
- Is there any such limitation in a detritus food chain?
- The detritus food chain starts from the decomposition of organic matter and the nutrients and energy released flows to other trophic levels in step by step manner.
- Because there is a partial digestion of food to obtain chemical energy by microbes, a lot of organic nutrients are excreted in the form of waste.
- But according to the 10% law of energy transfer the detritus food chain is also restricted till 4 to 5 trophic levels. They are usually even less because the energy production is low.
