    Ecosystem
    • An ecosystem can be visualised as a functional unit of nature, where living organisms interact among themselves and also with the surrounding physical environment.
    • The term ecosystem was proposed by A.C. Tansley in 1935 where eco implies the environment and system denotes an interacting, interdependent, integrated complex.
    • Ecosystems vary greatly in size from a small pond to a large forest or a sea.
    • The entire biosphere is sometimes regarded as a global ecosystem, but  is too big and complex to be studied at one time.
    • Hence, it is convenient to divide it into two basic categories, namely:
      • Terrestrial:  Forest, grassland and desert are some examples of terrestrial ecosystems.
      • Aquatic: pond, lake, wetland, river and estuary are some examples of aquatic ecosystems.
    • Man Made ecosystems:
      • These are the artificial ecosystems which rely on the human efforts to sustain.
      • They do not possess a self regulating mechanism.
      • They have almost no diversity and have simple food webs.
      • Crop fields and an aquarium can be considered as man-made ecosystems.
