Conversation with J. Chaitanya, a student at EPCMS&RS-AHS pursuing a BSc in Medical Imaging Technology

East Point College of Medical Sciences and Research Centre was established in 2014. Courses offered by East Point College of Medical Sciences and Research Centre include BSc, MBBS, MS and MD. Admission to the EPCMS&RS-AHS is done based on the candidate's performance in the entrance examination. In a conversation with J. Chaitanya, a BSc student, discuss her current experience with the EPCMS&RS-AHS, which includes courses and specialisations, theory and practical-based knowledge, facilities, hostels, interaction with the industry experts, teaching approach and more.

Careers360: Tell us something about yourself. Where are you from? What made you pursue an AHS degree? What do you hope to achieve with East Point College of Allied Health Sciences?

J. Chaitanya: I’m Chaitanya J., currently pursuing my B.Sc in Medical Imaging Technology (MIT) at East Point College of Allied Health Sciences. My deep interest in the medical field from an early age motivated me to choose this career path. The idea of contributing to patient care and being part of a healthcare environment has always inspired me. I joined East Point with the goal of building strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills that will prepare me for a successful career in diagnostic imaging. I aspire to graduate as a confident, skilled, and compassionate professional, ready to serve the community and make a meaningful impact in the field of healthcare.

Careers360: Which year are you in currently? What has been your most rewarding academic experience so far?

J. Chaitanya: I am currently in the second year of my Allied Health Sciences programmes. So far, my journey has been both enriching and inspiring. I’ve had the opportunity to learn several new subjects and enhance my technical and clinical understanding of the course. The most rewarding part has been applying what I learned in theory to practical situations during lab sessions and discussions. These hands-on experiences have helped deepen my understanding of healthcare practices. It’s been fulfilling to see my skills improve and my confidence grow as I progress through each semester.

Careers360: Tell us about the course curriculum and specialisations offered. Is the learning more theory-based or practical-oriented?

J. Chaitanya: The institute is affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), and the curriculum is structured in accordance with the university’s regulations. The Allied Health Sciences programme offers a wide range of specialisations, including Medical Imaging Technology (MIT), Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), Anesthesia & Operation Theatre Technology, Perfusion Technology, and Cardiac Care Technology. Recently, additional programmes such as Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT) and Emergency & Trauma Care Technology have also been introduced.

The curriculum is thoughtfully designed to provide a well-balanced blend of theoretical learning and practical exposure. Core subjects are delivered through classroom teaching, while practical skills are developed through laboratory sessions and regular clinical postings based on the student’s specialisation. This integrated approach ensures that students not only gain academic knowledge but also build the confidence and hands-on experience required to perform effectively in real-world healthcare settings.

Careers360: Did you face any difficulties in the initial months after joining the institute?

J. Chaitanya: No, I didn’t face any major difficulties during my initial months at the institute. The environment at East Point College is very student-friendly and welcoming. Our faculty members are supportive and approachable, which helped me settle in quickly. Fellow students were also helpful, and the positive atmosphere made it easy to adapt. The structured orientation, clear course guidance, and open communication between teachers and students ensured that I could focus on my studies without any unnecessary stress. The transition felt smooth, and I soon felt at home within the campus environment.

J. Chaitanya: Yes, the institute regularly organised conferences and sessions aligned with our course specialisations. These included both in-person and virtual events where subject experts shared valuable insights into real-world practices in the healthcare field. One memorable experience was attending workshops on radiology and imaging techniques, where experienced professionals explained clinical applications and case studies. These sessions helped us stay updated with the latest advancements in our field and provided a deeper understanding of how theoretical concepts are applied in hospital settings. It was a great initiative that enriched our learning beyond textbooks and classroom lectures.

J. Chaitanya: Yes, our college actively facilitates interactions with industry experts and healthcare professionals. One such experience was a workshop on breast imaging organised specifically for radiology students. The sessions were led by experienced professionals who shared valuable insights into advanced imaging techniques and their clinical applications. These interactions were extremely informative and helped us understand how our academic knowledge aligns with real-world diagnostic procedures. They also gave us a clear perspective on current industry expectations and best practices. Such events greatly enhance our practical understanding, boost our confidence, and inspire us to stay updated and continue learning beyond the classroom.

Careers360: Tell us about the faculty-student ratio and your experience with the teaching approach.

J. Chaitanya: At East Point College, the faculty-student ratio is very good, which allows for personalised attention. The teachers here are approachable, supportive, and always willing to clarify doubts. Their friendly nature creates a positive learning environment where students feel comfortable interacting and asking questions. The teaching style focuses on both academic excellence and skill development. Whether in theory classes or practical sessions, faculty members ensure we understand the subject thoroughly. This is a unique advantage that not every medical college provides. The hospital is well-staffed, with specialised departments that offer students hands-on training during clinical postings. J. Chaitanya: The hostels at East Point College are clean, well-maintained, and provide all essential amenities. J. Chaitanya: During my free time, I love spending time in the campus library, which is spacious and well-stocked with resources. It’s a peaceful place to catch up on reading or prepare for exams. I also enjoy being on the college grounds, where a variety of sports activities are organised. From cricket and football to basketball and volleyball, students have several options to unwind. These recreational activities help us stay active, refreshed, and maintain a healthy balance between academics and personal well-being. The lively and engaging campus environment keeps us motivated and energised throughout.
