Rutherford atomic model and its limitations

Rutherford atomic model

  1. Most of the part of the atom is empty and atom is spherical in shape.

  2. Each atom consists of a small, heavy, positively charged portion located at the centre, known as nucleus.

  3. All positive charge of atom (i.e protons) are present in nucleus and electrons are distributed in extra nuclear part of atom.

  4. Since the atom being electrically neutral, the number of protons in the nucleus is equal to the number of electrons in extra nuclear part.

Limitations

  1. The position of the electron was not mentioned.

  2. The stability of the atom was not explained.

  3. Line spectrum was not explained.
