Glandular Epithelium

Glands can be defined as the modified cells that can synthesize and secrete chemical substances.
Epithelial cells form the multicellular exocrine glands that line the cavity of the abdomen and chest.

Based on the mode of secretion, the exocrine glands can be classified as follows:

1. Merocrine glands: The secretions are present within the vesicles that move to the apical surface of the cells and secretions are released through the exocytosis. For example, sweat glands.

2. Apocrine glands: The secretions accumulate near the apical surface of the cell. This portion along with the secretion pinches off and secretion is released. For example, mammary glands.

3. Holocrine glands: It involves the rupture of the entire cell. The secretion is released when the cell bursts. For example, sebaceous glands.
