Interpretation of Monohybrid Cross: Law of Segregation
    • According to the Law of Segregation, two alleles of a gene controlling each character stay together in the individual, but during gamete formation by meiosis, the alleles of a pair segregate or separate from each other so that a gamete carries only one allele of a character.
    • Since one gamete contains one allele of each character, all gametes are always pure.
    • The law of segregation is, therefore, also called the law of purity of gametes.
    • This law is based on the fact that the alleles do not show any blending and that both the characters are recovered as such in the F2 generation though one of these is not seen at the F1 stage.
    • A homozygous parent produces all gametes that are similar while a heterozygous one produces two kinds of gametes each having one allele with equal proportion.

    Significance of Law of Segregation:

    • It is the most fundamental principle of heredity that has universal application with no exception.
