Quick Facts

  • Law of Independent Assortment is considered one of the most asked concept.

  • 14 Questions around this concept.

Law of Independent Assortment

  • Based upon observations on dihybrid crosses (crosses between plants differing in two traits) Mendel proposed a second set of generalizations that we call Mendel’s Law of Independent Assortment.
  • According to this law, the alleles of two pairs of traits separate independently of each other during gamete formation and get randomly rearranged in the offspring at the time of fertilization, producing both parental and new combinations of traits.
  • The law of independent assortment is applicable to only to those factors or genes which are either located distantly on the same chromosome or occur on different chromosomes.
  • The linkage is an exception to the law of assortment. (Linkage will be explained in the upcoming concepts).
