Direct or Vectorless Methods of Gene Transfer

    Microinjection:

    • In this method, the foreign DNA is directly injected into the nucleus of an animal cell or plant cell by using microneedles or micropipettes.
    • It is used in oocytes and embryos.
    • The term transfection is used for the transfer of DNA into eukaryotic cells, by various physical or chemical means.

    Biolistics or Gene-gun:

    • Biolistics is a means of introducing DNA into cells that involve the bombardment of cells with high-velocity microprojectiles coated with DNA.
    • In this method, tungsten or gold particles, coated with foreign DNA are bombarded into target cells at a very high rate.
