Direct or Vectorless Methods of Gene Transfer

Microinjection:

  • In this method, the foreign DNA is directly injected into the nucleus of an animal cell or plant cell by using microneedles or micropipettes.

Biolistics or Gene-gun:

  • Biolistics is a means of introducing DNA into cells that involve the bombardment of cells with high-velocity microprojectiles coated with DNA.
  • In this method, tungsten or gold particles, coated with foreign DNA are bombarded into target cells at a very high rate.
  • It is extensively used for plant cells.
