India has one of the most ancient forms of medical system. With more and more people trusting age-old non invasive methods to manage health concerns, these schools of medicine are gaining popularity everyday. The trend is increasing not just among Indians but also foreigners as well. As a result, the scope of making a career in ancient medicine has increased and hence, a lot of students are showing interest in courses offered by the Ministry of AYUSH.
In 2014, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare launched the Ministry of AYUSH with a vision to provide cost effective and alternative healthcare services to people. From an academic and career point of view, AYUSH is the best option to pursue a medical degree other than MBBS and BDS. In AYUSH courses, students can pursue both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.
Through the NEET result 2023, a total of 52,720 seats are available in 914 colleges. The degrees offered are Ayurvedic medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), Homeopathy and Surgery (BHMS), Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS), and Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS).
Careers360, in this article, takes a look at the courses offered by the Ministry of AYUSH and also suggests the future opportunities for AYUSH graduates.
Those aspirants who have the required cut off score are eligible for participation in the counselling process. The admission officials allocate seats according to the NEET score, seat availability, reservation required and other variables and preferences.

General or Other Backward Class applicants must receive a minimum of 50 per cent in PCB and aggregate, Schedule Caste or Schedule Tribe applicants need a minimum 40 percentile score, and persons with disability require minimum 45 per cent . The NEET test is available to students from recognised boards, including NIOS and open schools as well.

All of the AYUSH courses have a solid academic and professional foundation. The competition to enrol in all courses is fierce. However, the NEET 2022 exam reveals that the BHMS (Homeopathy) and BAMS(Ayurvedic) are the most popular courses among all the AYUSH courses.
MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) and BAMS are two separate programmes that have succeeded in the healthcare industry. BAMS is a traditional medical practice, whereas MBBS is a contemporary medical practice.
While MBBS focuses more on pharmaceuticals and modern medical procedures, BAMS focuses more on alternative therapies and herbal medicines. Additionally, while MBBS students concentrate on diagnosis and treatments, BAMS students are expected to comprehend the human body and how it functions.
BAMS seeks to cure illnesses holistically and naturally by focusing on their underlying causes. The patient's mind and body will benefit greatly from this method of medical care.

BAMS is more than just Ayurvedic science; students also learn modern science in this course. BAMS students can pursue a career as an ayurvedic pharmacist, therapist, specialist, clinical trial coordinator, medical representative, and so on. If one chooses to pursue advanced studies, they can pursue a master's degree in public health or a master's degree in health administration. Students could also pursue a postgraduate diploma programme.
In India, homoeopathy is the third most prevalent style of medicine. In BHMS, students study modern subjects as well as homoeopathic subjects. It covers mind and body healing strategies, homoeopathic pharmacy, fundamental concepts of homoeopathy, and so on. If students desire to continue their education, they can pursue an MD in homoeopathy, a master's degree in psychiatry, a master's degree in regenerative medicine, or a master's degree in hospital administration, among other options.
Both BAMS and BHMS have a wide range of applications. Students only need to choose what is best for them, as both courses provide excellent prospects in both urban and rural places. In fact, internationally as well.

Hello Aishwarya,
With a UP AYUSH State Merit List rank of 1708 in the OBC category, your chances of getting a BHMS seat in Kanpur or Prayagraj depend on the category-wise cutoff of previous years, seat availability, and the counselling round. Typically, top government colleges like King George’s Medical University or major private BHMS colleges have cutoffs for OBC candidates ranging from around 500 to 1500, but this can vary each year.
Since your rank is 1708, you might have a chance in lesser-known or smaller private BHMS colleges in Kanpur or Prayagraj, but securing a seat in the most sought-after government colleges is less likely. It is recommended to participate in all counselling rounds, fill multiple choices strategically, and consider nearby cities for better chances. Also, keep an eye on vacant seats during mop-up or stray vacancy rounds, which can increase your chances of admission.
I hope this answer helps you. If you have more queries, feel free to share your questions with us, and we will be happy to assist you.
Thank you, and I wish you all the best in your bright future.
