Today, healthcare operates in teams. Doctors are driving diagnostic and treatment methods to allow patients to achieve their health care goals. While it is essential that doctors conduct the diagnosis and treatment, there is an increasing demand for qualified professionals who can support the doctor with these clinical duties and patient care whilst helping to fill the skills gaps generated by shortages of primary and specialist services. This is where Physician Associates (PAs) will play a vital role.

The Bachelor of Physician Associate (BPA) is a tailored undergraduate qualification that provides training for students who want to assist doctors with diagnosing illness, doing physical examinations, interpreting tests, and supporting treatment plans. While a new and fast-growing profession in India, it provides a fantastic opportunity to work at the core of patient care.
A Physician Associate's role is to bring together the relationship of physicians to patients. BPA graduates are trained under a medical model, and they will be prepared to practice within a variety of health care areas, such as: general medicine and surgery, emergency care, pediatric care, and internal medicine.
As India’s healthcare system is evolving, especially in rural and underserved areas, Physician Associates are being integrated into the system to provide better access to healthcare, especially ongoing care. The demand is expanding in hospitals, community health centres, outpatient facilities, and even medical research.
The expectations of a BPA graduate include deep clinical knowledge and practice ability, along with soft skills necessary for patient contact and collaboration. Key skills include:
Deep understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology
Ability to examine patients, take patient histories and interpret exam findings
Ability to interpret imaging and lab results
Ability to communicate treatment plans and counsel patients
Clinical reasoning and decision making
Ability to collaborate effectively with a team and to be resilient and compassionate in care
Graduates of the BPA program can take on a variety of clinical and support roles such as:
Physician Associate (PA) in general practice, surgery, internal medicine, or emergency medicine
Medical Officer Assistant
Clinical Coordinator
Outpatient/Inpatient Ward Assistant
Health Screening Consultant
Research Assistant in Clinical Trials
Health Program Facilitator
While some positions may require registration or licensing, the role of a PA is gaining recognition across both private and public sectors.
BPA graduates are qualified to work in:
Multispecialty hospitals and medical colleges
Private clinics and outpatient departments
Emergency departments and trauma care units
Rural and community health centers
Diagnostic centers and preventive care programs
Government health projects and schemes
Clinical research organizations
They are often seen working alongside physicians, performing a wide range of medical tasks under supervision.
Government Sector: Physician Associates can contribute to healthcare delivery in primary health centers (PHCs), district hospitals, and national health initiatives, particularly in areas with doctor shortages.
Private Sector: opportunities are more diverse and often better compensated. Roles may include assisting in specialized surgical or medical departments, participating in hospital management systems, or supporting telemedicine and digital healthcare services.
Many BPA graduates choose to build on their qualifications with:
Master’s in Physician Associate Studies or Medical Sciences
Diplomas or certifications in specialized areas like cardiology, emergency care, orthopedics, or critical care
Public health programs (MPH) for those interested in policy and healthcare delivery
International PA programs or licensing, especially in countries like the UK, Canada, or the Middle East
PhD or research-focused courses, depending on academic interests
These pathways can lead to senior clinical roles, teaching positions, or healthcare leadership.
Salaries for BPA graduates vary depending on location, work setting, and specialization. On average:
Entry-level roles: Rs 3.5 – Rs 5.5 lakh per annum
With 3–5 years’ experience: Rs 6 – Rs 9 lakh per annum
Senior or specialized roles: Rs 10 lakh or more annually
Urban private hospitals and specialty departments typically offer higher salary packages.
Many well-established institutions actively hire Physician Associates. These include:
Apollo Hospitals
Fortis Healthcare
Max Healthcare
Medanta – The Medicity
AIIMS and other government medical institutions
Health departments under NHM and Ayushman Bharat
NGOs and global health organizations
Clinical research and CRO companies
A typical career trajectory might look like this:
Start as a Physician Associate under supervision
Progress to Senior Physician Associate or Department Coordinator
Move into Clinical Educator, Health Program Manager, or Specialist Assistant roles
With further qualifications, pursue positions in medical research, academics, or hospital administration
There are also international career pathways available in countries recognizing the PA role officially.
Although Physician Associates are under the supervision of a physician and do not practice independently in most systems, once hired, very experienced PAs can provide their services in amenable organizational settings such as health camps, outreach clinics, teleconsultation platforms, etc., and normally as part of a larger medical team, for example. BPAs can also work in independent freelance clinical educator roles, freelance health consulting roles, or as a research collaborator.
Working as a Physician Associate provides a dynamic, rewarding career. It puts you at the center of patient care. If you enjoy continuous learning and want to have a real impact on people's lives, Physician Associate will give you all of this and more. In a time of increasing demand for skilled medical support professionals, a Bachelor of Physician Associate (BPA) will lead you towards a meaningful, respected, and rapidly changing and rewarding career in healthcare.
