The B.Sc. in Perfusion Technology course comes under allied health sciences. This is a three-plus one-year degree course that trains students to operate the cardiopulmonary bypass machine during open-heart surgeries. Perfusionists, also known as perfusion technologists, are crucial members of the surgical team, responsible for maintaining the patient's circulatory and respiratory functions while the heart is stopped or bypassed during surgery. As a perfusionist, students ensure patients stay alive when their hearts are stopped, playing a crucial, life-saving role in heart surgery teams.

Globally, cardiac diseases are rising rapidly, which leads hospitals to perform more complex heart surgeries. This practice is increasing the need for skilled and trained perfusionists. Clinics and medical centres now routinely include perfusion services, keeping graduates in demand.
Students develop skills in operating heart-lung machines, managing blood flow, monitoring vital signs, administering medications, and handling stressful situations.
Solid grounding in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and instrumentation
Operating heart-lung and ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) machines
Performing anticoagulation and blood-gas analysis.
Students should be able to handle pressure and should have clear & critical thinking ability.
Must focus on every detail; attention to small errors can be critical.
Should have emotional resilience for long surgeries and emergency calls
Should have excellent communication with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses

Government jobs may offer better job security and benefits like pensions, AIIMS, PGI, and many other government institutions offer jobs to perfusion technologists. While private sector jobs might offer higher salaries and potentially more exposure to advanced technologies, Fortis, Max, Apollo, Medanta, and many other private institutions offer jobs to perfusion technologists. Both government and private sector jobs offer opportunities for perfusion technologists, with variations in salary, benefits, and work environment.
After completing graduation in Perfusion Technology, to boost their career, students can pursue many higher studies, like:
M.Sc. in Perfusion Technology
Postgraduate Diploma in Perfusion Technology
Students can do fellowships in pediatric perfusion or advanced ECMO
Students can do research and Ph.D. programs in perfusion science or biomedical engineering.
International certifications like ABCP (USA), EBCP (EU), ANZCP
Below are the breakdowns of current annual salaries for perfusionists in India:
Fresher: INR 2.5–4.5 lakhs per annum
Experienced 2–5 yrs: INR 4.5–8.5 lakhs per annum
Senior 5+ yrs experience: INR 8.5–18 lakhs per annum, with some earning INR 20 + lakhs per annum
Some top hospitals in India, like Max, Apollo, Fortis, and Medanta, typically offer INR 6–8 lakhs per annum for experienced perfusionists. Roughly per month, this can be in the range of INR 20–25 thousand for a fresher, INR 35–50 thousand for an experienced, and INR 65–140 thousand at senior levels.
Many recruiters actively hire perfusion technologists:
Hospitals like AIIMS, PGI, Apollo, Fortis, Max, Medanta, and many more.
Public & research institutions like ICMR, DRDO, CSIR, and medical colleges.
Health-tech & coding firms like TCS, Cognizant, and Accenture.
Industries like Terumo, Medtronic, LivaNova, Siemens, which make medical devices.
Below is the general progression path in the career of a BSc Perfusion Technology graduate. Career growth paths are different in the government and private sectors. In the government sector, a consistent path, fewer shifts, slightly lower pay, and private sector, faster promotions, more shifts, better-paid corporate roles. Students can also work in device sales/ training, hospital admin, academic roles, or research.
