AIIMS Post Basic BSc Nursing 2027 Important Topics and Chapter-wise Weightage: AIIMS conducts the AIIMS Post Basic BSc Nursing exam. It does not publish a chapter-wise weightage for this exam, and it does not release the question paper. So no one can give you an official figure. If you are a GNM nurse planning to join the BSc Nursing (Post-Basic) course at AIIMS, your first question is probably, 'Which chapters should I study first?' The written test is short, with only 70 questions, but the syllabus is as wide as your whole GNM course. That makes choosing what to revise first the real challenge. What we have done is build our own estimate from the questions we could actually examine, and we explain exactly how. Continue reading to find out more.

First, the paper itself. The Post-Basic entrance has two stages. Stage I is a written computer-based test, and Stage II is a 30-mark interview.
Detail | Stage I (written) |
Duration | 90 minutes |
Questions | 70 MCQs, 1 mark each |
Negative marking | −⅓ per wrong answer; 0 if unanswered or marked for review |
Language | English |
Subjects | Fundamentals of Nursing; Medical-Surgical Nursing (with Anatomy, Physiology and Pharmacology); Obstetrics and Midwifery; Paediatric Nursing; Community Health Nursing; Psychiatric Nursing; Professional Trends |
We analysed AIIMS Post Basic Nursing 2026 question paper and sorted each question by subject. Then we adjusted for the fact that 15 questions cannot show every subject. Fifteen questions is about one-fifth of the paper, and recalled questions are not an official record. So the result is a range, not a single number.
Subject (sample of 15) | Questions in sample | Topics seen |
Medical-Surgical (with A&P, pharmacology) | 6 | Hypokalemia ECG, Charcot's triad, myocardial infarction, Crohn's disease, universal donor, antidote for magnesium sulfate |
Fundamentals | 3 | Stoma care, abdominal examination sequence, local hot application |
Obstetrics | 3 | Puerperium, pathological retraction ring, signs of true labour |
Community Health | 3 | NUHM, endemic disease, JE vaccine schedule |
Paediatric, Psychiatric, Professional Trends | 0 | None recalled |

The sample was heavy on Medical-Surgical and light on the last three subjects. Because the syllabus lists all seven subjects, we kept a share for each.
Subject | Estimated marks (of 70) | Priority |
Medical-Surgical (incl. A&P, pharmacology) | 22–28 | Very high |
Fundamentals of Nursing | 8–12 | High |
Obstetrics and Midwifery | 8–12 | High |
Community Health Nursing | 8–12 | High |
Paediatric Nursing | 5–8 | Medium |
Psychiatric Nursing | 4–6 | Medium |
Professional Trends | 3–5 | Lower, but easy marks |
Medical-Surgical alone can be about a third of the paper, and the three subjects after it (Fundamentals, Obstetrics and Community Health) can together match it.
The recalled questions here were clinical, not definitions: what does this ECG change point to, which condition gives this triad of signs? Prepare by body system and learn each condition as a short pattern of cause, signs, tests, nursing care and complications.
Cardiovascular: myocardial infarction, heart failure, ECG changes in electrolyte disturbances.
Gastrointestinal and liver: inflammatory bowel disease, cholangitis and gallbladder disorders, stoma care.
Fluids, electrolytes and blood: potassium and sodium imbalances, blood groups and transfusion.
Pharmacology: antidotes (for example, calcium gluconate for magnesium sulfate toxicity), drug classes, routes and calculations.
Also revise: respiratory, renal, endocrine (diabetes) and neurological disorders, plus the related anatomy and physiology.
Subject | Important topics to revise |
Fundamentals | Vital signs, health assessment sequence, hot and cold applications, asepsis, nursing process, medication administration, positioning, ostomy and wound care |
Obstetrics and Midwifery | Antenatal care, stages and signs of labour, abnormal labour, pre-eclampsia and magnesium sulfate, postpartum haemorrhage, puerperium, family planning, newborn care |
Community Health | National health programmes (including NUHM, launched in 2013), national immunisation schedule, epidemiology terms (endemic, epidemic, pandemic), communicable diseases, vital statistics, health indicators |
A few of these are quick scorers. The recalled paper asked the immunisation timing of a vaccine and the meaning of "endemic". Both are one-line facts. If you know the national immunisation schedule dose by dose, you will not lose those marks.
None of these appeared in the 15 recalled questions, but they are in the official subject list, so do not skip them.
Paediatric Nursing: growth and development milestones, immunisation, nutrition problems, common childhood infections and newborn conditions.
Psychiatric Nursing: mental status examination, therapeutic communication, mood and psychotic disorders, defence mechanisms, commonly used drugs.
Professional Trends: nursing ethics and law, Indian Nursing Council basics, professional roles, and nursing management principles.
These three subjects are usually the cheapest to revise. A few days of focused reading can secure most of their share.
Start with Medical-Surgical, then Obstetrics, Fundamentals and Community Health.
Give the last three subjects a short, fixed slot each week instead of leaving them for the end.
Practise clinical-scenario MCQs. Reading a chapter once is not enough.
Do not guess blindly. With −1/3 marking, guess only after removing two options.
Re-check this plan when AIIMS releases the 2027 notification.
