    Glands of Small Intestine

    Brunner’s Glands:

    • These are present only in the duodenum.
    • These are located in the submucosa.
    • The main function of these glands is to produce a mucus-rich, alkaline secretion (containing bicarbonate).
    • This mucus neutralizes the acidic content of chyme which is introduced into the duodenum from the stomach.
    • It also provides an alkaline condition for optimal intestinal enzyme activity, thus enabling absorption to take place in the small intestine.

    Crypts of Lieberkuhn:

    • These are the simple tubular structure that occurs throughout the small intestine between the villi.
    • The following cells are present in crypts of Lieberkuhn:

    Note:

    • The secretion of intestinal glands is called intestinal juice or succus entericus.
    • The enzymes present in the succus entericus are maltase, isomaltase, sucrase, lactase, enterokinase, aminopeptidase, dipeptidase, nucleotidase, nucleosidase and intestinal lipase.
    • The pH of succus entericus is 7.8

    Peyer's Patches
    • These are the collections of large oval lymph tissues, located in the mucosa of the small intestine.
    • These are mucosa-associated lymphoid tissues (MALT).
    • These are abundant in the ileum.
    • They form an important part of the immune system by monitoring intestinal bacteria populations and preventing the growth of pathogenic bacteria in the intestine.
