Autonomic Neural System
- The autonomic nervous system is also termed as the visceral, involuntary or vegetative nervous system
- It supplies nerves to the heart, blood vessels, glands, other visceral organs and smooth muscles and thereby maintains heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, gastrointestinal motility, urinary output and all other visceral functions within physiological limits
- Two types of autonomic nervous system are:
Sympathetic Nervous System
Parasympathetic Nervous System
- The sensing part is performed by the visceral sensory component, which consists of visceral sensory neurons and general visceral afferent fibres
- Information from the continuous monitoring activities of the visceral sensory components are sent to the ANS, so that the visceral motor component can make the needed adjustments for the correct functioning of organs
- The basic components of ANS are
PRESYNAPTIC FIBRES ----------- SYNAPSE ----------- POSTSYNAPTIC FIBRES
(PREGANGLIONIC FIBRES) (GANGLION) (POSTGANGLIONIC FIBRES)
