CAM Pathway
- CAM (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism) plants are found in xerophytic conditions.
- CAM pathway is exhibited by crassulaceae, euphorbiaceae, cactaceae etc.
- Their stomata open only during the night, fixing carbon onto different compounds and then releasing the fixed carbon into the C3 cycle during the day when plants perform photosynthesis.
- The CO2 taken up by succulent plants at night is fixed in a similar way as it takes place in C4 plants to form malic acid, which is being stored in vacuole.
- These acids are decarboxylated and the CO2 released is fixed to produce PGA.
