Class Cyclostomata - Characteristics Features
  • This class includes the most primitive vertebrates, the lampreys and hagfishes
  • Hagfishes are scavengers and lampreys are ectoparasite
  • They have a sharp, circular jawless mouth with horny teeth
  • They have a slender eel-like body.
  • They do not have paired fins and scales
  • They have an elongated body bearing 6-15 pairs of gill slits
  • The cranium and vertebral column are made up of cartilage.
  • They have closed circulatory system with two-chambered heart
  • Cyclostomes are marine but migrate for spawning to fresh water. After spawning, within a few days, they die.
  • Their larvae, after metamorphosis, return to the ocean.
