Class Cyclostomata - Characteristics Features
- This class includes the most primitive vertebrates, the lampreys and hagfishes
- Hagfishes are scavengers and lampreys are ectoparasite
- They have a sharp, circular jawless mouth with horny teeth
- They have a slender eel-like body.
- They do not have paired fins and scales
- They have an elongated body bearing 6-15 pairs of gill slits
- The cranium and vertebral column are made up of cartilage.
- They have closed circulatory system with two-chambered heart
- Cyclostomes are marine but migrate for spawning to fresh water. After spawning, within a few days, they die.
- Their larvae, after metamorphosis, return to the ocean.
