Double Circulation In Humans

Double circulation in humans

  • The type of circulatory system that occurs in mammals, in which the blood passes through the heart twice before completing a full circuit of the body
  • It includes two circulations i.e. systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation

Systemic circulation

  • Heart-------Body----------Heart
  • Systemic circulation is important for transporting oxygen and nutrients to different tissues of the body and removing carbon dioxide and other wastes from the tissue
  • This type of circulation includes flow of oxygenated blood from the left ventricle to all parts of the body and deoxygenated blood from various body parts to the right atrium.
  • The arteries of the systemic circulation arise from aorta. It also includes bronchial arteries which carry nutrients to the lungs
  • Veins bring deoxygenated blood into the superior vena cava, inferior vena cava or the coronary sinus which opens into the right atrium

Pulmonary circulation

  • Heart ---------Lungs---------Heart
  • Pulmonary circulation includes the flow of deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs and return of oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
  • The pulmonary trunk arises from the right ventricle and then bifurcates into the right pulmonary artery and left pulmonary artery
  • Right pulmonary artery and left pulmonary artery supply deoxygenated blood to the right and left lungs respectively. Exchange of gases occurs in lungs
  • Similarly, two pulmonary veins from each lung transport oxygenated blood to the left atrium
