    Juxtaglomerular Apparatus
    • It is located just adjacent to the vascular pole of the renal corpuscle.
    • The DCT comes in direct contact of the afferent and efferent arteriole and that region of the DCT forms the macula densa.
    • Macula densa is a cluster of cuboidal epithelial cells that monitors the composition of the fluid that flows through the DCT.
    • They respond to the concentration of Na+ in the fluid and release the paracrine signals in the form of ATP and adenosine.
    • A second cell type in this apparatus is the juxtaglomerular cell.
    • This is a modified, smooth muscle cell lining the afferent arteriole that can contract or relax in response to ATP or adenosine released by the macula densa.
    • A second function of the macula densa cells is to regulate renin release from the juxtaglomerular cells of the afferent arteriole.
