    Plasmolysis and Deplasmolysis
    • The term Plasmolysis is defined as “the contraction of the protoplasm to form an undifferentiated mass within plants due to loss of water through exosmosis.”
    • It occurs when the plant cell is placed in a hypertonic solution.
    • To begin with, the plasma membrane detaches itself from the cell. This stage is called incipient plasmolysis
    • The vacuole decreases in its size and finally becomes indistinguishable. This stage is called evident plasmolysis.
    • If the evident plasmolysis continues, it will cause the death of the plant cell.
    • The space created due to the shrinking of the protoplasm is occupied by the plasmolysis solution, which is a hypertonic solution.
    • Plasmolysis is usually reversible
    • When a plasmolysed cell is kept in a hypotonic solution, it will regain its original shape and this process is called deplasmolysis.
    • Bacteria do not survive in salted pickles and jams due to plasmolysis.
    • Mycoplasma is osmotically resistant.
