Receptors

Receptors

  • A sensory organ or a cell which receives stimuli from the environment and passes impulses to the nervous system is called the receptor.
  • It is always connected to the central nervous system through the sensory nerves.
  • These can be classified according to the type of stimuli they receive:

Mechanoreceptors:

  • These receptors respond to the mechanical changes due to physical deformation of their plasma membranes.
  • These are of following types:

Tangoreceptors: respond to touch and pressure,
                           Baroreceptors: respond to stretching
                           Algesireceptors: respond to pain
Statoreceptors: respond to acceleration and gravity
Phonoreceptors: respond to airborne sound waves

Thermoreceptors:

  • These receptors respond to temperature.

Caloreceptors: respond to heat, for example, Ruffini’s corpuscles
Frigido Receptors: respond to cold, for example, Krause’s corpuscles

Chemoreceptors:
                             These receptors to chemicals.
Gustatoreceptors: respond to taste, for example, taste buds
                             Olfactory Receptors: respond to smell

Nociceptors:

  • They respond to potentially damaging stimuli that result in pain.
