Dental Council of India (DCI) is an authority competent to regulate dental education and the profession of dentistry across India. The statutory body was constituted on April 12, 1949, under the parliament act- The Dentists Act, 1948 (XVI of 1948). DCI is financed by the grant from the Govt. of India under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (Department of Health). Various State Governments, Universities, Dental Colleges, Central Government, etc. is represented by the General Body of the Dental Council of India.
In order to regulate dental education which includes seats, infrastructure, the establishment of a new college or course, and other activities MoHFW introduced the Dental Council of India with some new sections. Therefore prior permission from DCI to set up a new college, start a new course, to increase the admission capacity or other dentistry profession, is mandatory.
DCI regulates dental education, in which for Undergraduate (UG) it offers BDS, for Postgraduate (PG) it offers MDS and PG Diploma and for doctorate courses it offers DH/DM. As of now under the DCI, a total of 279 colleges of Master of Dental Surgery (MDS), 323 colleges of Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), 9 colleges of PG Diploma, and 111 colleges of DH/DM. The Dental Council of India has been established with the objectives which are below mentioned.
Both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate degree levels, DCI makes sure to maintain a uniform standard of Dental education.
DCI has to contemplate the investigations for granting permission to start new dental colleges, increase the dental seats, or start new courses of study.
DCI is the authority competent to set or prescribe the standard curricula for the training of dentists, dental hygienists, dental mechanics, and the conditions of such training.
DCI is responsible for setting up the minimum standard of examination or other requirements that need to be met to secure the qualification.
In order to ensure that the dental institutions are maintaining the prescribed standards, DCI has to do regular supervision.

The Dental Council of India is constituted to regulate dental education, dental profession, and dental ethics across the country.
The Council 6 constituencies represent the Central Government, State Government, Universities, Dental Colleges, Medical Council of India, and the Private Practitioners of Dentistry.
The Director-General of Health Services is the Ex-Officio Member for both the Executive Committee and General Body.
The President, Vice-President, and the members of the Executive Committee are elected by the councils themselves.
The elected President and the vice-presidents are also the Ex-Officio Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee.
Procedural, financial, and daily activities and affairs of the Council are used to be governed by the executive committee.
DCI has the responsibilities to give recognition to the dental degrees for maintaining the uniform standards of dental education in the country.
In respect of function, DCI uses to inspect various dental institutes and observe the deficiency, and if required also take suitable remedial action against that.
In order to maintain high standards of dental education and practice across the nation, the State/Union Territory Governments and the Universities are required to follow the below-mentioned guidelines.
No Dental College will be allowed to function unless and until the Dental Council of India has satisfied itself through proper inspections and give permission.
No Dental Institution is permitted to start a new course unless and until the Dental Council of India has satisfied itself through inspections in respect of Teaching Staff, Equipment, etc. for both the undergraduate or postgraduate degree level.
