The NEET is the only medical entrance exam in India, through which admission to undergraduate medical courses such as MBBS, BDS, and other allied medical fields are given. Every year, lakhs of students across the country appear for this examination, making it one of the largest and most competitive medical entrance exams in India. Since its inception, the NEET UG exam has been conducted in offline mode in a pen-and-paper format. However, the offline conduct of the NEET UG exam has always remained a centre of talk due to allegations of cheating and paper leaks. To counter this, there were speculations, that NTA might shift to a hybrid mode in NEET 2025 from its traditional offline mode. But this is not the case this year since NTA clarified that NEET will only be conducted offline. Read this article to know what is a hybrid mode that NEET UG might be shifted to.

A hybrid exam mode generally refers to a combination of online and offline methods taken together. If the Hybrid Testing Technology in NEET 2025 was to be implemented, then NEET 2025 might have been conducted by using both online and offline components.
Online Component (Digital Mode): A part of the NEET 2025 exam might have been conducted online, where the NEET question papers will be delivered digitally at the exam centres. No question papers would have been delivered in offline mode at the NEET 2025 exam centres. This move will remove the need to physically handle the question papers and will reduce the chances of paper leaking.
Offline Component (Pen-and-Paper Mode): In this part, once the question papers are delivered digitally, the traditional offline (paper-pencil) NEET exam mode might be applied to answering the questions. Candidates will fill their responses in the NEET OMR sheet just like it has been done in the past. The only change will be they won’t be given physical question papers. By following this offline component, candidates from backward areas won’t have to face any challenges that they might possess in the online mode.

Enhanced security and fairness: If NEET 2025 were to be conducted in a hybrid mode, then it would enhance security by avoiding paper leak incidents, and hence will improve the fairness of the exam.
Reduced Pressure on Exam Centers: If NEET exam mode 2025 were to be shifted to hybrid, then exam centres wouldn’t have to worry about paper leaks and other such incidents. This will ensure a better management of large candidate volumes.
While the NEET hybrid mode 2025 system could bring some positive changes in the NEET UG exam, it could also bring some challenges. Some of these challenges in the implementation of hybrid exam mode in NEET 2025 are as follows -
Both students and examiners would need proper training to adapt to the new hybrid system. Students accustomed to traditional pen-and-paper exams may need time to adjust to digital tools.
Online exams are susceptible to technical issues such as server crashes or network disruptions. Although these issues are rare, they could pose significant challenges.
While digital exams can enhance security, they also raise concerns about data privacy, hacking, and cheating. The exam body would need to implement foolproof measures to protect sensitive candidate information.
The NTA was expected to implement some other possible changes in NEET 2025 other than the hybrid exam mode. Some of these possible changes are as follows -
The NEET UG exam might be conducted in two stages earlier, similar to the JEE format. NEET 2025 in two phases, if conducted, then there would have been prelims and mains stage. This approach would enable the authorities to manage candidates more effectively and address their needs more efficiently.
As there is no limit to the number of attempts in the NEET exam, candidates can appear for the medical entrance test as many times as they want. However, there can be a limit in NEET attempts, which can increase the competition level.
As per various media reports, there might be an introduction of Biometric attendance in NEET 2025 to avoid cases of impersonation and cheating. Till now, the attendance of students is taken offline which is time-consuming and has a risk of cheating. To ensure fair practice, the NTA might introduce a biometric attendance system in NEET UG 2025.
