MBBS admissions are subject to state policy for admission through state-wise NEET counselling. Different states have different policies regarding MBBS admissions. Some states have an open state policy that allows students from all over India to apply for seats in their government medical colleges. Most states have a closed policy that only admits students from that state to their government medical colleges. Private colleges in closed states mostly only admit students who are residents of that state, but they generally have a management quota that allows them to admit students from other states. Deemed universities follow an open policy and admit students from different states.
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts NEET UG counselling for 15% All India Quota seats of central universities and other institutions whereas, the state authorities conduct counselling for 85% state quota seats. The counselling process that follows the declaration of NEET UG results is crucial for aspirants aiming to secure seats in government and private medical colleges across the country. While many states limit their medical admission to domicile candidates, several states offer open state counselling.
