    Concepts Covered - 2

    The Skull: Cranial Bones
    • Skull forms the skeleton of the head.
    • It consists of total 29 bones
    • It includes Cranial Bones, Facial bones, Ear ossicles and Hyoid bone
    • The skull region articulates with the superior region of the vertebral column with the help of two occipital condyles (dicondylic skull).

    A) Cranial Bones:

    • The cranium is formed by 8 bones.
    • The bones which form the cranium are:

    PAIRED BONES

    • PARIETAL
    • TEMPORAL

    UNPAIRED BONES

    • FRONTAL
    • OCCIPITAL
    • SPHENOID
    • ETHMOID

    • The cranial cavity, in which the brain is lodged, posteriorly opens by foramen magnum.
    • The brain is connected to the spinal cord at this foramen.
The Skull: Facial Bones, Ear ossicles and Hyoid bone

    Hyoid Bone:

    • The hyoid bone is situated in the wall of the upper part of the throat, just above the larynx.
    • Although it is not a bone of the skull proper, it is customarily considered with that portion of the skeleton.
    • It serves as a point of attachment for some of the muscles of the tongue and floor of the mouth but does not articulate with any other bones.

    Ear ossicles:

    • These are the ear bones.
    • There are six ossicles: 2 mallei, 2 incus and 2 stapes.

    Facial Bones:

    • There are 14 bones which form the skeleton of the face

    PAIRED

    • MAXILLA
    • ZYGOMATIC (CHEEK)
    • PALATINE
    • LACRIMAL
    • NASAL
    • INFERIOR NASAL CONCHAE
