Introduction to the Reactions of Photosynthesis
    • Photosynthesis is a two-step process.
    • The following reactions are involved in the process:
      • Light Reaction
      • Dark Reaction

    Light Reaction:

    • It occurs in the grana.
    • Grana contain packets of chlorophyll called quantasomes. Each quantasome contains 230 molecules of chlorophyll.
    • Solar energy is trapped by chlorophyll.
    • Splitting of water or photolysis of water occurs.
    • Oxygen is released.
    • ATP is produced in the process called photophosphorylation.
    • NADP is reduced to form NADPH.
    • It is depicted by Hill’s Reaction.

    Dark Reaction:

    • It occurs in the stroma of the chloroplast.
    • Glucose is formed using carbon dioxide, ATP for energy, and NADPH as reducing power.
    • It is also called the Calvin cycle.
