The respiratory centre is composed of group of neurons located in the medulla oblongata and pons varolii.
Therefore, the respiratory centre is divided into medullary and pons respiratory centres.
Excess CO2 or hydrogen ions stimulate the respiratory centres of the brain and increase the inspiratory and expiratory signals to the respiratory muscles.
Medullary Respiratory Centres:
Dorsal Respiratory Centres (DRC): It is located in the dorsal portion of the medulla oblongata. It causes inspiration.
Ventral Respiratory Centres (VRC): It can cause both inspiration and expiration.
