  • Disease: AIDS (Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome)
  • Pathogen: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • Symptoms
    • Fever, lethargy, pharyngitis, weight loss, nausea, headache, rashes, etc.
    • Immunity is compromised due to destruction of T-lymphocytes.
  • Diagnosis:

  • Transmission
    • Via blood and semen
  • Incubation Period: 6 months to 10 years
  • Treatment:
    • Use of certain drugs can prolong the life of a patient as there is no permanent cure.

 

  • Disease: Hepatitis B
  • Pathogen: Hepatitis B Virus
  • Symptoms:
    • Fatigue, jaundice, persistent low-grade fever, rash and abdominal pain.
    • Can cause cirrhosis and liver cancer.
  • Diagnosis:
    • Diagnosed by Australian antigen test, also called Hepatitis-B surface antigen (HBSAg).
    • ELISA can also be used for diagnosis.
  • Transmission:
    • Through blood transfusion, sexual contact, saliva, intravenous drug abuse, sharing of razors.
  • Incubation Period:
    • 30-80 days
  • Treatment:
    • There is no cure for this STD.

  • Disease: Genital Herpes
  • Pathogen: Herpes simplex virus
  • Symptoms:
    • Vesiculopustular lesions followed by clusters of painful ulcers over genitals and anal region.
    • Symptoms are severe in females.
    • Infection of the neonate can occur in case of infected females.
    • Fever, headache, pain, itching, vaginal and urethral discharge occur.
  • Diagnosis:
    • It is done through clinical symptoms, antigen detection, PCR and nucleic acid hybridization.
  • Transmission:
    • Through sexual contact.
  • Treatment:
    • There is no cure for this disease.

  • Symptoms:
    • Warts develop over the skin and mucosal surface of external genitalia.
    • In females, the infection  may enter the vagina and cervix.
  • Diagnosis:
    • Diagnosis is made through clinical symptoms, antibody detection, culture and DNA hybridization.
  • Transmission:
    • Through sexual contact
  • Treatment:
    • Cryosurgery is used in the removal of internal warts.
