    Transitional Epithelium

    Structure

    • Transitional epithelium is made up of 4 to 6 layers of cells. 
    • The cells of the deepest layer are columnar or cuboidal.
    • The cells of the middle layer are polyhedral while the cells of surface layers are large, globular or umbrella-shaped. 

    Location:

    • This epithelium is present in the renal calyces, renal pelvis, ureters, urinary bladder and part of the urethra.

    Function

    • The transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder can be stretched or relaxed without being damaged. It also provides protection.
