Acceleration
  • Rate of change of velocity with time.

  • Formula-

              a=change in velocity / change in time

                           a=\frac{v_{f}-v_{i}}{t}

  • Tips for Acceleration-

  1. It is a vector quantity

  2. Dimension = LT^{-2}

  3. S.I unit =  ms^{-2}

  •    Eg. A car starting from rest accelerates uniformly to a speed of 75 m/s in 12 seconds. What is the car's acceleration ?

v_{i}= 0

v_{f}= 75 m/s

a= ? a=\frac{v_{f}-v_{i}}{t}

=\frac{75-0}{12}

a = 6.25 m/s2

  • Types for Acceleration

based on the nature of acceleration

                  There are three types of acceleration

  1.  Positive Acceleration-

  •  If final velocity is greater than the initial velocity.  For:  V> V1

  • E.g- When a bus speeds up.

  1.     Negative Acceleration-

  • When final velocity is less than initial velocity. For: V_1 >V_2

  • E.g-When a bus slow down.

  1.     Zero Acceleration-

  • When final velocity is equal to the initial velocity. For:  V_1 =V_2

  • E.g-When a bus is moving with uniform velocity.
