Cori Cycle

 CORI'S CYCLE

  • The Cori cycle or glucose-lactate cycle is metabolic cooperation between the skeletal muscle working under low oxygen conditions and the liver.
  • This cycle can be summarized as follows:
  1. This cycle occurs in liver and muscles
  2. During glycolysis, Lactic acid is produced from pyruvic acid in the muscles
  3. This Lactic acid is carried in the blood to the liver where 1/5th of it is oxidised to water and carbon dioxide and 4/5th is converted into glycogen
  4. The Glycogen releases glucose into the blood which is reconverted to glycogen in the muscles
  5. The cycle is then repeated

 OXYGEN DEBT

  • As understood, Lactic acid undergoes oxidation and this is known as Cori's cycle
  • However during strenous exercise, the muscle does not get sufficient oxygen and thus Lactic acid is not properly oxidised
  • As a result Lactic acid accumulates in the muscle and this is Muscle Fatigue
  • This is used during muscle recovery
  • During recovery, the oxygen consumption of muscle increases and thus faster breathing should be continued for sometime
  • This extra oxygen consumed during recovery is called as Oxygen-debt
  • The extra oxygen oxidises the accumulated Lactic acid and thus restores the depleted creatine phosphate and ATP in the muscle fibres
