Disorders of the Male Reproductive System:

  • Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH):
    • Enlargement of the prostate gland due to old age.
    • Compresses the urethra, causing frequent urination.
    • Painful micturition.
    • Can be treated.
  • Prostate Cancer:
    • Responsible for 2 to 3% male deaths.
    • Often stimulated by testosterone, treatment involves removal of testes.
    • Acid phosphatase is the most common marker enzyme for this disease.
  • Sterility and Impotence
  • Inguinal hernia:
    • Tearing of inguinal tissue causing protrusion of intestine into the scrotum.
  • Cryptorchidism:
    • Testes fail to descend into the scrotum.
    • Caused by a deficiency of testosterone.
