    Structure of Ovum
    • The mature ovum is released from the ovary in the secondary oocyte stage.
    • It is spherical in shape and is almost devoid of yolk, hence alecithal.
    • The cytoplasm is called ooplasm, which contains a large nucleus called a germinal vesicle.
    • The nucleolus is quite prominent in the nucleus.
    • The ovum lacks centrioles.
    • The ooplasm is surrounded by the plasma membrane.
    • Very small vesicles called cortical granules are present under the plasma membrane.
    • Outside the plasma membrane, there is a narrow space called perivitelline space.
    • Outer to the perivitelline space, there is a layer of thick and acellular zona pellucida, which is secreted by the follicular cells.
    • Outer to the zona pellucida, there is another thick layer of corona radiata, which is secreted by elongated follicular cells.
    • There is an animal pole from which the polar bodies extrude.
    • The opposite of the animal pole is called the vegetal pole.
