White fibrous connective tissue
  • As the name suggests, the fibres in this tissue are white collagen fibres.
  • These fibres are arranged parallelly in bundles and in between these bundles fibroblasts are found in continuous rows.
  • The strength of white fibrous connective tissue is high while flexibility is limited.
  • The joint between skull bones is immovable due to the presence of white fibrous tissue.
  • The white fibrous connective tissues can be of following two types:
  1. White fibrous cords (tendons): In this type, the white fibrous connective tissue forms cords called tendons. These tendons connect muscles with the bone.
  2. White fibrous sheets: In this type, the white fibrous connective tissue forms sheets.  It is found in the dermis, connective tissue sheaths of muscles and nerves and tunica adventitia of large blood vessels, periosteum of the bone, perichondrium of cartilage, pericardium of heart, durameter of brain and spinal cord, renal capsule of the kidney, sclera and cornea of eyeball and fibrous capsule of penis and testes.
