An Interview with Dr Abhishek S. Medar, Physiotherapist & BPT Alumnus at EPCPT, Bangalore

In conversation with Dr Abhishek S. Medar, Physiotherapist & BPT Alumnus at East Point College of Physiotherapy, Bengaluru, he shares his experience with Careers 360. He discusses his work profile, career path, industry work, hostel life, group studies, campus activities, sports, and industrial requirements. Careers360: Tell us about your domain and your work profile. At the professional level, did you pursue the same field you were interested in, or did you switch?

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: Yes, I pursued my Bachelor of Physiotherapy at East Point College of Physiotherapy and continued in the same field with immense passion. Currently, I serve as a physiotherapist in a multispecialty hospital, focusing on orthopaedic and neurological rehabilitation. From the beginning, I was drawn to physiotherapy for its blend of science, empathy, and the hands-on healing approach it offers. It’s a field where you witness lives improving through movement and care, and that’s deeply satisfying. I’ve never felt the urge to switch careers because every day presents a new challenge, and I enjoy making a tangible difference in people’s recovery journeys.

Careers360: Can you briefly tell us about your career path so far?

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: After completing my internship at East Point Hospital, I joined a physiotherapy rehabilitation center in Bengaluru, where I handled a wide range of cases—from post-operative care to sports-related injuries. I also took up home consultation services to widen my clinical experience. Keen on continuous learning, I earned certifications in Manual Therapy and Kinesio Taping. These advanced skills added value to my practice. Currently, I am planning to pursue a Master’s in Orthopaedic Physiotherapy to further specialise and grow. Every step in my career has been purposeful, with patient care at the heart of it.

Careers360: Is the industry work different from what you learnt at EPCPT College?

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: While East Point College laid a strong academic and clinical foundation, real-world practice definitely brings new challenges. In the industry, you’re expected to make quick, evidence-based decisions, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and communicate effectively with patients and their families. The pace is faster and the expectations higher. However, the case discussions, clinical postings, and mentoring at EPCPT helped me develop critical thinking and adaptability. The transition from classroom learning to clinical independence was smoother because of the exposure I had in college. It’s a continuous learning curve, but my foundation helped me stay confident and prepared.

Careers360: How do you think your time in East Point College of Physiotherapy has added value to your life, both professional and personal?

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: East Point College played a pivotal role in shaping me, not just as a professional but as a person. Professionally, it gave me rich clinical exposure and taught me to analyse and treat with a structured approach. Personally, it helped me build confidence and leadership skills. I learned time management, teamwork, and the value of empathy—both in the hospital and through outreach activities like rural camps. Presentations, committee roles, and academic challenges moulded me into a more holistic and resourceful individual. It wasn’t just education; it was a transformational experience.

Careers360: What was your initial thought process when you joined EPCPT College?

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: Initially, I was both excited and nervous. Stepping into physiotherapy was a leap into the unknown, but I was motivated by my desire to be in a healthcare profession. I chose EPCPT because of its strong reputation, integrated East Point Medical College hospital setup, and hands-on clinical learning environment. I remember thinking, “Will I be able to cope?” But the supportive faculty, well-structured program, and peer learning helped me settle in quickly. In hindsight, choosing EPCPT was one of the best decisions I made—it laid the path for a meaningful and impactful career.

Careers360: You must have spent a memorable time at EPCPT College. Do you miss being a part of it? Share a few good memories.

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: Absolutely—I miss my college days often. Walking through the corridors, attending sports day, and participating in “Physio Fest” are memories I hold dear. The physiotherapy awareness camps we conducted offered both fun and learning. Hostel life had its own charm—group studies, late-night discussions, and friendships that felt like family. Those were the days when we were learning, growing, and dreaming together. Every visit to the college now brings a wave of nostalgia and a sense of pride.

Careers360: Briefly take us through your life on campus, the activities you used to do and your routine life.

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: Life at EPCPT was a balanced blend of academics, clinical learning, and recreation. Mornings began with theory classes, followed by practical or clinical postings at East Point Hospital. Afternoons included seminars, case discussions, or project work. Evenings were spent playing volleyball or simply catching up with friends in the campus gardens. Weekends gave us time to relax, work on assignments, or explore new learnings. The environment was supportive and motivating, fostering both academic and personal growth.

Careers360: Apart from academics, what were the other activities you were involved in, and how did they enrich your life?

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: I actively participated in the college’s cultural committee, organising fests and annual functions. I also volunteered at blood donation drives and community health check-up camps. These engagements helped me develop time management and organisational skills. Handling logistics and coordinating with different teams gave me leadership experience, while volunteering taught me compassion beyond the classroom. These experiences built a strong foundation for dealing with high-pressure situations and helped me evolve into a well-rounded professional.

Careers360: How did you keep updated with the industrial requirements, and what was the role of the institute in it?

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: Our college ensured we were aligned with industry trends through regular guest lectures, hands-on workshops, and national conference participation. Faculty often shared the latest clinical practices and research during lectures. EPCPT’s encouragement to attend events like Physicon and skill-based training gave us a broader perspective. These initiatives helped bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and real-world expectations, preparing us for smoother transitions into professional roles.

Careers360: You are a proud alumnus of this top College. What is the best part of EPCPT Institute from a student's perspective?

Dr Abhishek S. Medar: The best aspect of EPCPT is the integration with East Point Hospital, offering consistent clinical exposure right from the early semesters. This early immersion helped build confidence and clinical acumen. The faculty is approachable and nurturing, always ready to guide. The green and serene campus provides the perfect setting for learning. Dr Abhishek S. Medar: Physiotherapy is a deeply rewarding profession—physically, intellectually, and emotionally. If you’re considering BPT, enter the course with curiosity and commitment. Take your practical sessions seriously, because they’re where real learning happens. Be open to learning from every patient you meet. Stay updated, attend workshops, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Most importantly, be patient and compassionate—because every patient story is different, and your role is to help them heal, move, and thrive.
