Gene Mutation:

  • It is the population that evolves and not its individual members. The role of an individual is to pass its genetic variation to its offspring.
  • Mutations are sudden and heritable changes.
  • Changes in gene structure and expression due to addition, deletion, substitution or inversion of nucleotides are called gene mutations.
  • The frequency of gene mutations increases in the presence of mutagens.
  • Gene pool is the sum total of all the different genes and their alleles present in a population.
  • Gene pool evolves new genes and brings about variations in the population.
