Syngamy
  • It refers to the complete and permanent fusion of male and female gametes to give rise to a zygote.
  • Depending on the source of fusing two gametes, syngamy can be of following types:
    • Endogamy or self-fertilization in which the male and female gametes are derived from the same parent, as seen in hermaphroditic organisms like a tapeworm.
    • Exogamy or cross-fertilization in which the male and female gametes come from different male and female parents, as seen in unisexual organisms like humans. Some hermaphroditic animals like the earthworm also perform cross-fertilization.
  • Depending on the structure of the fusing gametes, syngamy can be of following types:
    • Isogamy: It is the fusion of morphologically similar gametes. These can be flagellated (Chlamydomonas) or non-flagellated (Spirogyra).
    • Anisogamy: It is the fusion of structurally similar gametes that differ in size.
    • Oogamy: It involves the fusion of a large non-motile female gamete called egg or ovum with a small and motile male gamete called sperm or antherozoid.
