Quick Facts

  • Inhibitory gene action, Duplicate gene action are considered the most difficult concepts.

  • 14 Questions around this concept.

Solve by difficulty

Which of the following is an example of inhibitory gene action?

Which of the following factors can influence inhibitory gene action?

In the following questions, a statement of assertion (A) is followed by a statement of reason (R)

(1) If both Assertion & Reason are true and the reason is the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark A

(2) If both Assertion & Reason are true but the reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion, then mark B

 (3) If Assertion is true statement but Reason is false, then mark C

(4) If both Assertion and Reason are false statements, then mark D

Assertion: Duplicate gene action plays a significant role in the evolution of organisms.

Reason: Gene duplication provides genetic material for functional divergence and evolutionary innovation.

What is the consequence of duplicate gene action?

In Shepherd’s purse, the presence of either gene A or gene B or both results in triangular capsules; when both these genes are in recessive forms, the oval capsules are produced. Infer the F2 ratio.

Inhibitory gene action
  • In this type of gene interaction, a dominant allele at one locus can mask the expression of both (dominant and recessive) alleles at second locus.
  • An example of this type of gene interaction is found for anthocyanin pigmentation in rice.
  • The green colour of plants is governed by the gene I which is dominant over purple colour.
  • The purple colour is controlled by a dominant gene P.
  • Here the allele I is epistatic to alleles P and p. Hence, green colour will be produced wherever gene I is present and purple color will appear only when gene I is recessive homozygous.
  • When both the genes are recessive homozygous, there will be green colour.

Duplicate gene action
  • Sometimes a character is controlled by two non-allelic genes whose dominant alleles produce the same phenotype whether they are alone or together.
  • In Shepherd’s purse (Capsella bursa-pastoris), the presence of either gene A or gene B or both results in triangular capsules; when both these genes are in recessive forms, the oval capsules produced.
