Medical Seats 2026: Over 10,000 Seats for Aspirants, Check Year-Wise Growth

Over 10,000 medical seats in MBBS and PG courses will be added in the upcoming years. A total of 5,000 new postgraduate seats and 5,023 new MBBS seats will be introduced in government medical institutions. This decision is a big relief for medical aspirants, as it will increase the opportunities for them to pursue medical education in India.

The Centrally Sponsored Scheme has been approved for strengthening and upgradation of State Government/ Central Government Medical Colleges/Standalone PG Institutes/Government Hospital for increasing 5,000 PG seats. On the other hand, extension of the CSS has been approved for upgradation of existing government medical colleges for increasing 5,023 MBBS seats. The schemes will run from 2025-26 to 2028-29, having a long term impact on medical education in the country. In this article, we have discussed the year wise increase in MBBS seats in India and how this decision will impact MBBS aspirants in the long term.

Increase in MBBS seats in 2025-26 session

As per the seat matrix released by NMC for 2025-26 session, a total of 5,950 MBBS seats have been added. Government MBBS seats experienced a jump of 3.83% from the previous year while the private MBBS seats saw a jump of 6.34%. Out of all the states, Jammu & Kashmir has recorded a major increase in MBBS at 24.35%.

The MBBS seats in India have increased significantly in the past years. As per the official data, a total of 1,23,700 MBBS seats are now available in 808 medical colleges across the country. The graph below shows the increase in the total number of MBBS seats year wise.

As per the official release, India has a total of 808 medical colleges with an intake of 1,23,700 MBBS seats. Over the past decade, the MBBS and MD/MS seat capacity has significantly increased. Also, to impart good medical education, a total of 25 AIIMS in India have been established out of which 20 are fully functional.

However, gaps still remain in specialist availability and equitable distribution of healthcare services. Therefore, the steps to create new MBBS seats and PG medical seats have been taken. To support this expansion, the government has also introduced new Faculty Regulations 2025 which will make it easier for medical colleges to hire qualified teachers and maintain quality education standards.

How will the expansion benefit medical aspirants and MBBS graduates?

The expansion of MBBS and PG seats in government medical colleges will benefit both the NEET UG aspirants as well as MBBS graduates. With increase in MBBS and PG seats in medical colleges, candidates will have to face less competition for a limited number of seats.

All this will be much clear after it becomes reality but as per the Cabinet approval we can say that the expansion of medical seats will open doors for thousands of aspirants to pursue their dream career. The increase in total number of medical seats in India marks a significant step towards strengthening the medical education of the country.

With a 79,000 NEET PG rank General category, getting MD Pathology through AIQ Round 1 in top government colleges is unlikely, as most close by 30,000–50,000 ranks.
