NEET 2024 exam was conducted on May 5 by the NTA in pen and paper mode. The authority announced the NEET result 2024 on June 4. The results for NEET 2024 quickly drew widespread attention due to an unprecedented number of candidates scoring a perfect 720 out of 720 score. A total of 67 students achieved top spot, all securing the All India Rank 1.
Concerns emerged regarding the scores of candidates who achieved 718 or 719 marks. With the exam’s marking scheme, it is impossible to score such marks. NEET UG 2024 question paper consists of 200 questions, where candidates need to attempt 180 questions. Each question is worth 4 marks, with a penalty of 1 mark for each incorrect answer. Therefore, with the NEET exam pattern, it is out of the question for a large number of students to score just 1 or 2 marks less than a perfect score.
Such closely clustered high scores raised suspicions about the accuracy of the result, with the students implicating the authority for using unfair means and asking for a thorough review.
The matter of 718 or 719 marks achieved by the students with the declaration of NEET result 2024 was addressed by the authority by explaining that compensatory marks were allocated to the students due to inadequate time allocation during the exam.
With 67 students as NEET 2024 toppers, allegations of question paper leak surfaced shortly after the exam results were declared. There were claims that some candidates had access to the questions before the test. This raised serious concerns about the integrity of the exam and the effectiveness of the NTA’s security measures.
On June 13, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled to cancel the NEET 2024 result for 1,563 candidates who had received grace marks due to time loss during the original exam. A NEET 2024 re-exam was conducted on June 23, 2024 for these candidates. Of these candidates, 813 attended the NEET re-test 2024.
The authority announced NEET 2024 re-exam results on June 30 for 1,563 students. The NEET UG 2024 result for those who were not asked to take the re-test was based on their original scores without the inclusion of grace marks. With the declaration of NEET 2024 re-exam result, 61 candidates were announced to be NEET 2024 topper with a perfect score of 720 out of 720. All these candidates scored 99.9971285 percentile.
